860 Ontario Street, c. 1904
In 1890 this lot of land was owned by members of the John A. Hopper family (born in 1804 and proprietor of the Hopper Hotel, near the Lockhouse in the mid-1800s). A dispute over ownership of this land reached the Circuit Court of Harford County, which was resolved by having a Trustee sell the lot in 1892 to Sallie A. Dennis and Peter Lesley Hopper, her brother. Both were children of John Hopper and had grown up in the Barnes-Hopper House at 701 North Adams Street. Peter Hopper created the Hopper Map of Havre de Grace, which is still in use. They sold this lot to Florence S. Silver (1874-1964), wife of William Scott Silver (1871-1942) in 1904. He was the only son of George B. and Catherine Charlotte Silver. It is believed that Florence and William Silver built this as their home in 1904.
Florence and William Silver sold this house in 1917, when they bought the Sappington House at 212 South Union Avenue. The new owner here was Mary Veronica King Young (1869-1932). Mary Young had come from Ireland with her parents but grew up in an orphanage in Baltimore. She married Thomas J. Young (1866-1938) of Havre de Grace and had two children—Irene Young Doyle and Robert Valentine Young. When Mary Young died in 1932, her heirs (her two children) sold the property to Thomas J. Young (their father). Because the children were her only heirs listed, it would appear that Thomas J. Young and Mary Young may have divorced.
Thomas J. Young in that same year (1932) deeded this new property to go to his latest daughter, Helen M. Young (b. 1905), upon his death. When Thomas died in 1938, Helen M. Young gained ownership.
In the mid-1940s, Helen M. Young married the widowed Daniel J. Gallagher (1886-1985) and she became Helen M. Gallagher. Her new husband owned several other properties in Havre de Grace. In 1947, all of their properties, including this, were deeded to their joint names. It is not known whether this home then became rental property. Ten years later (1947), four of their properties including this were deeded to Helen M. Gallagher’s name alone. She owned this home for about the next 40 years after which she sold it to two couples in 1988, Jay Emery III and John Fotiadis, Jr. and their wives.
From 1997 for about six years this home was owned by Kevin S. Burkett, who sold it to Randolph E. and Jessica Craig in 2003. Raldolph Craig was a Havre de Grace City Council member from 2009 to 2017. He is the son of David Craig, former Mayor of Havre de Grace and former Harford County Executive, who now works for the State of Maryland and is a well-known local historian. Randolph and Jessica Craig lived here with their children until 2016 when they sold it to Frances Blythe. The large rear fenced lot extends back to Linden Lane and contains a small rental home. Frances has continued to restore original features of this home and has created a large well-planted back garden with flowers and vegetables.
Most of the homes on Ontario Street, including this one, are considered historic and are located within the boundaries of the Havre de Grace National Register Historic District.
