315 Alliance Street, c. 1892

This charming Victorian house was most likely already here on this double lot when Martha Hammond (1833-1923) sold it in 1892 to William F. Day. Martha was widowed by the death of her husband, William Hammond, ten years earlier. William Day was best known in town for playing the clarinet for the Bayside Cornet Band (along with James Holly who played the snare drum), which had been organized in 1887. They played at many celebratory events in the city including at City Hall and parades.
William and Mary Day sold the house to Charles Carroll Creswell (1876-1970) and his wife, Catherine, in 1919. After four years, the Days sold it to Thomas and Alberta Foard, who had been married in 1901. Although Thomas died in 1943, Alberta continued living in the home for another ten years before selling it to William and Elizabeth Owens. The Owens family passed the home on to their son, also William Owens, and his wife who lived here into the 1990s.
Tara M. Phillips became the new owner in 2000 and after her marriage it also became home to her husband, James C. Custer. The Custers completely renovated it with hickory floors, a new roof, and other improvements before selling the house to Elizabeth Nemeth and Eric Hutchison in 2009. Elizabeth is no stranger to preserving and maintaining beautiful historic houses, as her parents had purchased and renovated the Spencer-Silver Mansion on Union Avenue when she was growing up. Elizabeth and Eric have painted their formerly white home in the beautiful color palette we see today.
There are two empty lots next to this house which formerly also had older homes. The lot adjacent to Strawberry Alley was recently cleared, having been the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses from 1949 for a few years.
