313 South Washington Street, c. late 1890s
This double lot was owned in the 1880s by Robert R. Vandiver (1808-1885), a prominent citizen who owned other properties in the city. He sold it in 1883 to John and Annie Huggins of Washington, D.C. They sold the lot to 22-year-old Edith Amelia Pratt (1870-1937) of Havre de Grace in 1892, who married Samuel Joseph Maslin (1870-1937) two years later. Edith Pratt was the daughter of Emily Elizabeth Myers and Charles W. Pratt.
Samuel was one of the children of Carville and Alice Maslin and grew up in the Lock House of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal. Carville served as Locktender from 1865 to 1900, when the Canal closed. Records do not indicate exactly when this house was built, but it is assumed that Samuel and Edith built it as their marital home soon after their 1894 wedding.
Edith and Samuel Maslin sold this in 1903 to William N. Coale (1866-1956) and his wife, Laura. William Coale was a banker with the First National Bank and served several terms on City Council. William Coale lived in this home from 1903 to 1951, through two terms as Mayor in 1917 and 1918, the death of his wife Laura Coale, and his remarriage to Maude Dabney Coale. Maude Coale was active in the Women’s Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church. The Coales sold the house in 1951 to Charles and Florence Stephans, who owned it for just two years before selling it to Harry and Emma Atkinson. The Atkinsons had owned a grocery store at the corner of North Adams and Otsego Streets for several years and sold the store the same year they bought this property (1953). Harry Atkinson also served on the City Council during the 1930s.
The Atkinsons, however, only retained ownership of this house for one year and sold it in 1954 to Winfield and Eva Denham. Eva Denham remained the owner until her death, having sold it to Woodrow and Tomey Hughes in 1967, reserving a life interest. After Woodrow and Tomey Hughes divorced it was purchased in 1974 by Tomey Hughes. Tomey married Fred Thomas Proffitt (1925-2001) in 1974 and they owned this house jointly until 1996 when they sold it to Scott E. Schoenfeld. He owned the house until 2003 when Donald S. Schaffer bought it from him.
In 2016 this home was bought by David and Melinda Craig. David is a well-known resident of Havre de Grace, former Mayor and former Harford County Executive, who was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland State Senate in the 1990s. Melinda Craig is active in a number of local organizations and in 2011 was appointed to the Board of Directors of Upper Chesapeake Health. This property, with a master suite, private staircase, a screened balcony off the master bedroom, and a welcoming front porch appears to be an investment property for the Craigs.
