323 South Union Avenue, c. 1867; rebuilt 1973

The house originally on this lot was conveyed by John H. Barnes in 1867 to Ellen F. Evans, wife of William F. Evans (1812-1892). It descended to Charles O. and Anna M. Fadeley who sold it in 1925 to Samuel M. Kimball (1882-1971) and his wife, Ethel. The Kimballs owned and operated a grocery store here, the “Duck Right In,” for about three decades until 1959 and Sam Kimball served on the City Council for several years beginning in 1939. In 1959 they sold this property to Robert E. and Victoria H. Kimball and eight years later it was bought by Lambert H. and Doris L. Babec.
The Babecs sold their home to the Babcar Company in 1967, of which Babec and Dr. John Carriere of Commerce Street were officers. Just one year later, the company sold this to Jeannette W. Miklas and Michael Miklas, Jr., a graduate of the US Naval Training Center at Bainbridge. It was there that the couple met, while Jeannette was an employee at Bainbridge. She later retired from the Perry Point VA Medical Center.
In 1972, Dr. Barry C. and Marsha R. Fuller bought this property; they demolished the original house and by 1973 had built what we see now in its place. In 1974 they sold a one-half interest in the property to Dr. Jeffrey and Francene Cohen. Dr. Barry Fuller was an optometrist who worked primarily with athletes. Fuller had a relationship with Bausch & Lomb and was one of 23 optometrists from around the country selected to go to the 1994 Olympics in Norway to aid with athletes’ vision needs. Just before the Olympics, Dr. Fuller and his wife divorced and he was accompanied there by his new wife, Kathy Fuller, who was the general manager of his practice. Dr. Jeffrey Cohen also was an optometrist.
After the 1994 Olympics, Dr. Fuller and the Cohens sold this to Edward V. and Darleen D. Somody. Edward was the agent for Shirts Across America, Inc. After moving to Aberdeen later, Edward served one term as an Aberdeen City Council member. In 1998, this property was bought by 323 South Union Avenue LLC, owned by local resident, Dr. David F. Jaffe, a dermatologist. With more than 30 years of experience, he had his practice here until 2017 when he moved his practice to Revolution Street.
This property, and the properties north and south of it, are now owned by the Harbor of Grace Enhanced Recovery Center, a licensed drug addiction treatment center, of which long-term Havre de Grace businessman, Kenneth Beyer is the Chief Executive Officer.
