613 Green Street, c. 1899, demolished
613 Green Street, c. 1899, demolished
This house existed here in 1899. It was conveyed by the Will of an owner, through the Pennsylvania Trust Company, to William R. Young (1828-1909) of Havre de Grace. It is worth noting that William R. Young is known to have owned several houses on both sides of Green Street as well as property on the town wharf before the turn of the century. Young was a former Bailiff who had an ice manufacturing facility.
This particular historic house is not especially notable as it resembles many other of the frame houses built in the city around that time. It does, however, for that same reason contribute greatly to the overall streetscape of Green Street where there are several similar houses, creating a distinct neighborhood atmosphere. At various times, this house was used as a rental, including in 1945 when William R. Pyle lived here.
In 2017, St. James AME Church, next door to this house, purchased it. The lot on which the church was built was bought in 1874, and the vestibule in front of the church was built at the turn of the century—as was this house.
FROM JOHN SHEAFFER, JR
(July 2025) I have more information about 613 Green Street. This was the Sheaffer family home for 50 years between 1947 or 1948 and 1998.
Edward E. Sheaffer and Edna Sheaffer (my grandparents) purchased the home for around $2500. The last rental tenant before the purchase was Billy Pyle's family as you've already noted on the site. They raised four children in the home and their eldest son, John Sheaffer (my father), went on to own 324 South Washington Street from 1998 until 2021 or so, which is also already noted on your site.
The Sheaffers moved to town around 1940 from Duncannon, PA and lived on Quarry Rd on the hill until purchasing 613 Green Street. Edward Sheaffer worked at the Livezey Lumber Yard behind Burns Row until he passed in 1967. Edna continued to live at 613 Green Street until she passed in 1997. The house went to the youngest son, Alan Sheaffer, who sold it to the Walker family shortly after.
